DVTV: Grass Valley to Long Beach

It’s taken me a while to get into Joanna Newsom, though I’m discovering more and more genius in her music and lyrics (not the shit film) with every song. What caught me was her simple yet captivating performance of ‘81 on Later with Jools Holland. If your into unique, original melodies and powerful poetic verse, take a listen. Think Laura Marling meets Kate Bush.

I’ve been stalking the Kiwi band ‘The Naked and Famous’ for a while now, and finally they’ve both released their debut album, and received the recognition they deserve through being shortlisted for BBC’s sound of 2011. These guys are definitely music for summer.  Best described as part electro, part hazey youth pop choir, so dreeaamy. I couldn’t really decide on which of their songs to post but listen/buy/download Young Blood too, as it is equally good, just in a different way. JUST BE IT

Punching In A Dream - Naked and Famous

Here is a chiller track from the debut album of Sydney duo Kyü. All i can say is this album exceeds all expectations and is an a taster of what we can expect from these goddesses.

So back from schoolies, a week of being drunk up in the psychedelic Byron Bay. While up there a couple of musical anthems became apparent, most noticeably “Only Girl in The World” and “Shots”. However during my paralytic states of good times, i tuned into  Glasser’s debut album Ring. As i lay on the floor of the bathroom i listened to ‘Plane Temp’ and imagined/hallucinated dancing in the summer surf. So from this, ‘Plane Temp’ has become my undertow chilled anthem for this summa + Byron.

For those of you who don’t know CocoRosie, your seriously missing out, however their music is an acquired taste. Took me a while to like Bianca’s squeaky rapping, though now I’m obsessed. I’ve always thought of CocoRosie as two artists who fell into making music by accident with no real musical talent. A sin i know. However with their most recent album Grey Oceans, I have truly been stunned and mesmerized by the genius of CocoRosie. Take a listen to this daytrotter session song of “R.I.P Burnface”. There is this greater beauty and magic in it, compared with the album version. With the seamless combination of the Hulusi flute, Tez’s beatboxing and Sierra’s dreamy vocals you cant help but love. Hopefully this track will inspire you to look deeper into CocoRosie.

Here is the latest release from mystery sweedish drug duo JJ. Their Albums ‘no.2’ and ‘no.3’ are the greatest indie dream pop records i have heard. I immediately fell in love with this band the moment i heard them at Rough Trade East. Honestly, could not recommend these guys more. But here is something a little darker- sampling The XX’s genius ‘Intro’.

So i still haven’t brought the new Warpaint album, “The Fool”, as i have been finishing my IB, and refuse to illegally download it. However, i did take a sneaky listen to their eponymous track, “Warpaint”. On first impression i thought it was ‘borepaint’ however the moment the guitar riff kicks in, you’re sailed into the climactic dreamy mist of Warpaint’s heart, fueled by drugs and love. Listen to this high.
